Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) was officially established on January 1, 1997. Before upgraded to Municipal, MPKj was previously known as Hulu Langat District Council, which began operations since January 1, 1986, under Act 171, Local Government Act 1976. Mukim Kajang, Mukim Cheras, Mukim Semenyih, Mukim Beranang, and Mukim Hulu Langat are all part of its administrative jurisdiction.

The establishment of MPKj was rationally as a dynamic Local Authority capable of fast and orderly planning and development of the Kajang area. This is due to Mukim Kajang's population growth, which is expanding year after year. Apart from that, the establishment of MPKj is appropriate since the MPKj administrative region is surrounded by an increasing number of housing areas and major project development.

Kajang Municipal Council now has a small offices / branch offices network in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn Cheras and Hentian Kajang Jalan Reko. The administrative area of ​​Kajang Municipal Council is 78,761 hectares (787.61 sq km)

As a Local Authority (PBT), Kajang Municipal Council continues to improve relations with the Central and State Governments. The Ministry of Housing and Local Government is a stakeholder that compiles policies that cover all aspects of planning, development, and management for local authority across the country, including MPKj,

MPKj and Bandar Kajang have certain distinguishing characteristics. Sate Kajang is a well-known commercial brand both in Malaysia and overseas. Geographically, the MPKj area is bordered by Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's economic capital, and Putrajaya, the country's administrative capital. Apart from that, MPKj is surrounded by three states on the peninsula: Pahang Darul Makmur, Wilayah Persekutuan, and Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus. MPKj area is also fortunate because in its area there are various Institutes of Higher Learning which makes it high potential as a Knowledge City that could benefits its citizens.
